One of my favorite Tv shows is “who wants to be a millionaire”. The hot seat, the suspense everyone gets with the background sound of the heartbeat, some of the tricky questions and infact the entire concept of the show thrills me a lot. But my favorite part is the attitude of the host when he tries to make the contestant doubt his answer as he says “are you sure? … it’s that your final answer? … you know if you miss this, you lose N250,000”.
When he says this, the contestant on the hot seat, pauses for a while, mutters some words silently and seems to be under a lot of pressure or should I say literally “on a really hot seat”. At that point I ask myself a simple question ”Why is he thinking? This is one of the easiest questions? Could it be that this man who has played this far does not know the answer to this question?”
After pondering over this for a while, I came to understand that the contestant’s reaction was not due to the difficulty of the question but the value of the question at that moment.
It seems like our reaction and action towards to anything is influenced by its value.
The big question then is: What is the value of a single soul?
“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” Matt 16:26.
In Jesus’ answer, he compares a single soul to the entire world.
